The story takes off during the 1980s, in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana, The town's nearby National Laboratory ostensibly conducts scientific research for the U.S. Department of Energy, but secretly experiments with the paranormal and supernatural, sometimes on human test subjects. Unwittingly, they have created a portal to an alternate dimension they refer to as the Upside Down, whose presence begins to affect Hawkins residents in a calamitous way.
